The history of Myloi is the history of a place: a spring, a mill, a landing stage, a station, an olive grove. Almost everything happened somewhere between Pontinos hill and the sea, and almost everything is connected. The spring drove the mills, the mills drew the harbour, the harbour drew the railway. This archive shows those connections. Start with a period, a place, a person or a thread.

The day the king came

1941, war in Greece: Myloi from above

Two aircraft over the bay in 1941: the flying boat that took a British general away from the pier, and the German reconnaissance plane that photographed the village eleven weeks later.

The Patris, the first liner of a Greek shipping line with a regular service from Piraeus to New York. Here around 1915, with "PATRIS – GREECE" painted on the hull as a sign of neutrality during the First World War.

How to read this archive

Every fact shows how certain it is and where it comes from.

  • Proven confirmed by primary sources
  • Probable likely, but not fully proven
  • Tradition myth, legend or oral memory
  • Disputed sources disagree; both versions shown

Greece used the old (Julian) calendar until 1923. All dates here are in today's calendar; where a Greek source gives an old-style date, we show it too. The railway to Tripoli opened on 24 June 1891 old style, which is 6 July in our calendar.
