School talk: the trains of Myloi

Everything you need for a school talk or project about the old station in Myloi: a step-by-step plan, facts, photos and slides.

How to put your school talk together

  1. Start with a question

Ask your class: "Who has ever eaten souvlaki?" Then everyone will listen straight away.

  2. Say where Myloi is

Myloi is a village in Greece, in the Peloponnese. It lies by the sea, between the towns of Argos and Nafplio. Show it on a map!

  3. Tell three or four facts

Choose from the facts below. Show a photo with each fact.

  4. Tell something funny

The story of the souvlaki through the train window, or of the train that was late. That's the kind of thing your class will remember best.

  5. End with a quiz

Ask your class two or three questions. Who knows the answer?

Facts for your school talk

  • On 4 August 1886 the first train ran from Argos to Myloi.
  • From Myloi, a line was built through the mountains to Tripoli. The first train ran there on 1 February 1892.
  • At first, Myloi had two stations, belonging to two different railway companies. The small station closed in 1891.
  • In the big station, the stationmaster lived with his family above the ticket office.
  • In 1947 new trains came to Myloi by boat, because the bridge at Corinth had been destroyed in the war.
  • A steam engine uses lots of water. That's why there are two water towers at the station.
  • Sellers held trays of souvlaki up to the open train windows.
  • Since 2010 no regular trains have run, but the five station buildings and ten old locomotives are still there.
